When we go to school, we always study history. Always my favorite subject, we continue to learn from the past. Well there is no better history in basketball than the ancient Boston Celtics Dynasty, starting in the late 50's. Lead by Bill Russell and Bob Cousey they had the best 10 year stretch in profession sports history, winning 9 out 10 championships in the NBA.
How did they do it? Well it was more than just one thing, it was a well honed machine. But it started with defense.
Defense: Bill Russell was most noted for his outstanding defense. Not only did he dominate the paint, but he perfected the art of shot blocking. By keeping the ball in play he helped his teammates to easy scores. Plus he was a great help defender, intimidating potential scorers around the hoop. Most every year he was at or near the top in rebounding second chance shots. Best tip to improve defense, keep the feet moving, don't stand flatfooted. Also be aware of the angle between the man your covering, the ball and the basket.
Could it that defensive team will win the NCAA Tournament this year? Time will tell, because after all, it comes to just one game. Were as in the NBA, it's a seven Game Series!
